Job Purpose:

Maintains, repairs, and overhauls school buses and school bus equipment. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks. Directs the work of others. Trains and motivates maintenance staff.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Schedules and administers fleet maintenance, assists in troubleshooting problems with equipment. Communicates availability of vehicles for service with dispatch and Contract Manager.
  2. Delegates responsibilities as appropriate and monitors performance; handles disciplinary concerns and employee development.
  3. Ensures compliance on a day-to-day basis with State, Federal and Company requirement.
  4. Works closely with Contract Manager providing status of maintenance and budget requirements. Reviews repair orders.
  5. May order parts, and subcontract repair work.
  6. Use computer diagnostic equipment and computers for various task.
  7. Complete required paperwork on an timely basis and comprehend technical manuals
  8. Simple hand grasping, power hand grasping, fine hand manipulation, reaching from foot level to above shoulder level as necessary to complete assigned tasks
  9. Have a sufficient ability to communicate, through sight, hearing, and/or otherwise, to perform assigned tasks and maintain proper job safety conditions
  10. Ability to follow directions and routines.
  11. Ability to work independently with appropriate judgment
  12. Use computer diagnostic equipment and computers for various tasks
  13. Complete required paperwork on an timely basis and comprehend technical manuals

Education and Requirements:

  • Meet D.O.T. requirements and be CDL qualified as required by job assignment
  • Report to work on a regular and timely basis and complete the scheduled workday on a consistent basis
  • Ability to work varying shifts, additional hours and/or overtime depending on service needs
  • Stand for extended periods of time on concrete floors and other level and non-level surfaces
  • Sitting required infrequently throughout the duration of the workday
  • Lift, lower, push, pull, leverage and manipulate equipment and/or packages weighing up to 70 pounds
  • Assist in moving equipment up to 150 pounds
  • Work cooperatively in a diverse work environment
  • Have a sufficient ability to communicate, through sight, hearing, and/or otherwise, to perform assigned tasks and maintain proper job safety conditions
  • Bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb ladders and stairs, reach, pull, grasp, lift, stand, walk, and turn/pivot frequently throughout the duration of the workday
  • Full-time: 8-10 hours per day, 5 days per 7-day week
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE)

Major Responsibilities:

Maintains, repairs, and overhauls school buses and other company vehicles. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks. May direct the work of others. Works under general supervision with some latitude for independent judgment. May assist in training less experienced technicians or new employees.

1) Repairs and maintains school buses and other company vehicles while adhering to FMCSA guidelines.

2) Inspects and tests equipment at prescribed intervals of time and usage or upon malfunction or breakdown.

3) Inspects, tests, and aligns bus lights and wheels and maintains electrical systems and controls. Balances wheels to minimize wear on tires and rotates wheels at prescribed mileage intervals. Tunes up engine to maintain combustion control standards. Adjusts equipment to standards set by state DOT for motor vehicle inspections and safety standards.

4) Disassembles, inspects, and replaces worn or broken parts. Fixes and adjusts new or repaired parts. Oils and greases vehicles; changes filters.

5) Test drives repaired equipment.

6) Performs limited bodywork and repainting on vehicles after a breakdown or accident, as needed or as skills allow.

7) Maintains part usage records and orders repair parts from designated suppliers. May be required to maintain small parts storeroom.

8) Notifies supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken.

9) May direct work on an as needed basis of less skilled technicians.

10) All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

· 5 years automotive or diesel experience required

· High School graduate, AA, trade school degree preferred

· School bus experience a plus, ASE certification preferred
